Summer League Results 2015

Summer League Cup Finals Report

Report by Heather Nolan

After 7 weeks of summer league matches we arrived at the finals – both nights were wet and not the fun evenings which had been hoped for but the standard of netball was still excellent. The first evening saw the top 14 teams divide into 2 groups to play for the Denise Novis Cup. Teams were handicapped according to where they had finished in the league and would only have 12 minutes to catch up on their goal deficits or indeed to take advantage of the lead they had been given.

In Group A Beds Police pushed Premier Division champions lst Choice hard but Choice came out winners of their group with 35 pts. In Group B Cranfield Wolves were even closer to Ampthill Amazons, Premier league runners up with 30 points to Ampthill’s 33 points. The final started at 0-0 and all to play for. Ampthill Amazons had won the cup for the past 2 years – could they do it again or would lst Choice carry on their winning ways. Ampthill started in dominant form and were determined to keep their hands firmly on the trophy – lst Choice fought hard but could not catch up the 4 goal lead Ampthill had built up and when the final whistle went Ampthill put on more through the net to win the trophy by ll goals to 6.

Tuesday night saw the remaining 17 teams compete for the Summer League plate. The format was the same as the previous night and we were looking for 2 group winners. Group A was to be won by A Line Flyers from the lst Division with 37 points from Gamlingay Jets with 33 points. Group B threw up a surprise with 2nd Division Bedford Knights top of their group with 33 points beating lst Division Cranfield Tigers by one point. In the final Bedford Knights started with a 1 goal advantage but A line were quick to get on level terms and from there built up a lead. Goals would not go in for Knights but they continued to fight hard and make it difficult for A Line. But their efforts were to be in vain as A Line finally triumphed by 12 goals to 7.
