Cup Finals Week Two

This week was the second week of the Bedford & District Netball League Cup Finals. The crowd were treated to three games of exciting netball, 4th Division Riverwood Blackjacks v Christians In Sport, 2nd Division Cranfield Eagles v St Neots Sapphires and Premier Division Ampthill Amazons v Cranfield Cavaliers.

The first game on court was 4th Division Riverwood Blackjacks v CIS. The game began with Blackjacks Rachel Felton scoring well, but CIS tightened up in defence and with some good interplay through the centre court from Caroline Clough and Clare Bender making some fine interceptions they managed to take a grip on the game. Blackjacks Lizzie Wright combined with Holly Phillips fought hard to keep Blackjacks in touch but CIS Katherine Kouwenberg was defending well and helped CIS to a win of 7 points to 1 . Player of the Match was Blackjacks Holly Phillips.

The following 2nd Division game was between Cranfield Eagles and St Neots Sapphires. Both teams started quickly moving the ball round the court and we saw some accurate passing from both teams. Emily Whiteman was playing well in defence for Sapphires making it difficult for the Eagles team to find their shooters. But Eagles defenders Clare Buddle and Heather Watkins were marking tightly, enabling shooter Emma Evans to initially keep pace with Sapphires scoring. Through some excellent work from Sapphires attack of Stephanie Edwards and Yasmin Taylor to Isabel Pigg, Sapphires stretched away. Sapphires changed their team and Sam Harding was finding the net regularly with some accurate shooting whilst Eagles continued to contest every ball, particularly their captain Fran Wade who encouraged her team on. We saw a cameo appearance from Bernie Palmer on at goal attack for Eagles who was unlucky not to score. Sapphires proved too strong on the night with an impressive all round performance winning 7 points to 1 with Sapphires Isabel Pigg named Player of the Match.

The final game of the evening was the highly anticipated Premier Division match between Ampthill Amazons and Cranfield Cavaliers; both teams packed with skilled players so a close and exciting game was expected. Cavaliers scored first and we saw some good play between Cavaliers Emma Ramsey and Hannah Carter bringing the ball out of defence. Ampthills attack of Donna Lee, Emma Sears and Helen Cuthbert combined well and with their defence forcing errors in the Cavaliers goal circle Ampthill began to control the game. Cavaliers struggled to find their flow with Ampthill's Hannah Lane continuing to dominate in the Cavaliers goal circle, picking off loose balls and rebounds. Cavaliers worked tirelessly pushing forward and were rewarded with shooter Sam Brightman helping them make a late come back, but Ampthill's Caroline Howard at wing defence ensured Ampthill's victory 6 points to 0. Ampthill's Donna Lee was named Player of the Match.
