Cup Finals Week One

This week saw the first week of the Bedford & District Netball Cup Finals. A supportive and vocal crowd were treated to an evening of exciting netball featuring four games. The first was for the Youth Challenge Cup where a talented youth team play an adult team over a short format. The game was between Cranfield Crusaders and UHY Hacker Young and officiated by two up and coming young umpires, Katie Webb and Sophie Randall who both impressed with their handling of the game in front of the enthusiastic supporters.

The game started goal for goal with Crusaders winning the quarter 5-2. Crusaders stretched ahead to finish the second quarter 7-1 through some good attacking play from Lilly Hyde and Ellie Seamark. UHY recovered in the third quarter with some excellent shooting from Claire Benson Young and Angela Beattie supported by Laura Simmonds, taking the quarter 4-3. In the final quarter Crusaders Lilly Hyde produced some accurate shooting helping Crusaders to win the quarter 5-1. Victory for youth team Cranfield Crusaders 6 points to 2.

Next up was the 5th Division game between Cranfield Challengers and St Neots Panthers. The game was fast and furious with neither team settling and both making early errors, giving umpires Steph Lewey and Jeanette Johnson plenty to do with the first quarter finishing 4-4. Panthers Bethany Andreassen was shooting well and fought for every ball. Challengers struggled to bring the ball out of defence due to Panthers pressure and Panthers took the second quarter 6-2. Challengers made team changes for the third quarter and with Caz Evans they drew the high scoring quarter 7-7, drawing the quarter in the last seconds. Challengers made further changes in the final quarter but could not contain the scoring power of Panthers who won the quarter 5-2. St Neots Panthers were the winners 6 points to 2 with Panthers Bethany Andreassen named Player of the Match.

The third game of the evening was the 3rd division match between Flitton Flames and another Cranfield team, this time Cranfield Ravens, with umpires Julie Bassett and Kay Smith. Ravens took an early lead in the first quarter, although Flames defender Charlotte Cooke worked hard making good interceptions, Ravens won the quarter 7-4. The second quarter was a much closer affair with Flames Deborah Leaper finding her shooting range, but Ravens Jemma Jobling was tireless and with strong defending from Ellie Chandler saw them through to win 8-6. The third quarter proved to be the final quarter, although much tighter with Flames pulling back to within one of Ravens, Ravens held on until the final whistle to take the quarter 7-6. Cranfield Ravens ran out the winners 6 points to 0 as Flames could not catch them with Ravens Ellie Chandler named Player of the Match.

The last game of the evening for the 1st division cup between Team Beds and Ampthill Azure, umpired by Bernie Palmer and Cathy Carter was worth waiting for. This was as expected a really closely fought contest between two well matched teams and it did not disappoint their enthusiastic supporters. The game started with goals going with the centre passes but with Azures Laura Clough making life difficult in Team Beds shooting  circle and Lindsay Payton shooting well for Azure, Azure took the first quater 7-4. In the second quarter Team Beds took command winning the quarter 7-6. In the third quarter the score went goal for goal with Team Beds defence Annabelle Foxall and Eleanor Farley making fine interceptions which led to goals, with Team Beds edging the quarter 10-9. The final quarter remained a close exciting affair with the crowd getting behind their teams. Azures Laura Clough continued to work ceaselessly but Team Beds were true to their name and worked as a team with shooter Carly Wells putting up some excellent shots to make the final score 7-6 to Team Beds. After a great final the scores were equal but Team Beds were the winners 6 points to 2 having won three quarters to Azures one. Azures Laura Clough was named Player of the Match.

We look forward to next weeks Cup Finals being as exciting where teams will be playing for the Premier, 2nd Division and 4th Division trophies. The evening is hosted at the University of Bedfordshire, Polhill Avenue with the first centre pass at 6.30pm.
