Cup Finals 2019 - Fourth Division

Bedford & District Netball League held their Cup Finals showcasing its talented players and teams of the season. Six exciting and close matches took place at the University of Bedfordshire which were well supported by their respective enthusiastic and vocal followers. Jo Brewster the England Netball Development Coach presented the trophies for the evening.

The 4th Division match between Biggleswade Ravens and Westoning Gems.  Westoning had won the League title whereas Ravens were in 5th place so would the final reflect the difference in league finishing positions.

Both teams had a nervous start, but Ravens were the first to score having achieved an immediate turnover.  Westoning had a lot of the play but could not find the net and it was a while before we got to l goal apiece.  With some excellent shooting from Katie Salmon Biggleswade pulled ahead to get to 7 goals to 1.  Westoning then settled down and with some excellent interceptions from Julie Bassett they began to claw back the difference.  However, Ravens were very determined and ran out winners of the first quarter by 9 goals to 4.

Both teams made errors at the start of the second quarter but Westoning gradually found their discipline and with defenders Sarah Horne and Julie’s niece Kelsey in determined form they built up a 5 goals to 1 lead.  Their defence stayed strong for the rest of the quarter only allowing Ravens one more goal.

The third quarter was a very tight affair with Ellie Banks and Callie Davidson making both some lovely moves and some great feeds into Katie Salmon in the circle for Ravens while once again Julie Bassett was on great form in defence for Westoning.  In the end it was just the whistle and one goal in the last few seconds which would give the 3rd quarter to Ravens.

If Westoning were to do the double they had to win the last quarter by 4 goals and starting off well taking a 1 goal to 0 lead as they first intercepted Raven’s centre pass and then converted it into a goal. Despite great defence by Ravens, Westoning built up a 6 goal to 0 lead but then with super shooting from Katie Salmon Ravens started to come back and we were at 6 goals to 2 – which way would it go – the crowd cheered their respective teams on and with Gems centre going offside could Ravens take advantage.  But no, once again we saw an excellent interception from Gems to turn the advantage back and we were at 7 goals to 2.  This time with the end in sight Westoning dug in and ran out winners of the quarter by 10 goals to 2 and with that had done the double.

Congratulation to both teams for a very close final and well done to Umpires Angela Beattie and Sandra Howlett and congratulations also to Julie Bassett from Westoning Gems who was named player of the match.
