Cup Finals 2019 - First Division

Bedford & District Netball League held their Cup Finals showcasing its talented players and teams of the season. Six exciting and close matches took place at the University of Bedfordshire which were well supported by their respective enthusiastic and vocal followers. Jo Brewster the England Netball Development Coach presented the trophies for the evening.

For the final match of the evening we were being treated to the match between first division finalists Gamlingay Jets and BCNC Sapphires. These were two well matched teams with honours even in their league games and the match lived up to its high expectations.

Sapphires made an explosive start which was fast and furious but they settled to a steadier pace under the influence of the experienced players shooter Sandra Tathum and defender Lindsey Wilmot. Jets weathered the early storm and with skillfull court play from Nikki Webb and Kelly Knibbs through to thier impressive shooter Jo Rickard they clawed their way back to 5 all. The accurate shooting from Toni Wright-Brown for Sapphires and Rickard for Jets continued goal for goal until at the end of the quarter when Jets held their nerve they just edged it 9-8 in the dying moments.

The second quarter saw Sapphires keeper Amy Johnson make some telling interceptions whilst Tathum and Wright-Brown continued to score well winning the quarter 13-7.

With such well matched players the game was so close making great entertainment for the enthusiastic vocal supporters. With tight marking and a fast moving game the pressure produced errors on both sides but the deadlock was not broken until Sapphires led 11-10 to just pip Jets in taking the third quarter.

The high scoring carried on in the final quarter with Jets matching their black and yellow wasp coloured kits in creating quick and determined chances but they were unlucky with the ball bouncing out of the ring from a shot by Jennie Stout. They fought to the last moment but Sapphires Shara Merrikin and Kalisha Joseph worked hard feeding their shooters and with Wright-Browns accurate overhead passes to Tathum they ended taking the quarter 11-9.

BCNC won the first division Cup with Toni Wright-Brown named as Player Of the Match. The umpires were Julie Bassett-Gilham and Cathie Carter.
