Junior/Youth

Junior and Youth Leagues

Welcome To The Junior and Youth Leagues

The Bedford Junior and Youth League started over 20 years ago with 8 teams, the majority of which were school teams, competing against each other. Following a successful first season it has grown from strength to strength to the present day where over 70 teams, predominantly club sides, are now split into age groups. The aim of the league is to allow the players to play netball in a child friendly environment and to bridge the gap from junior to senior netball, helping the girls to move into senior netball at the age of 16.

The Youth League for school years 9 to 11 (ages 13 – 16), takes place on a Wednesday evening from September to April at the Bedford Academy. We currently have 23 teams playing in three divisions where they participate in the league and in cup and plate competitions. The top two teams at the end of the season are invited to take part in the Challenge Cup, a demonstration match, at the start of the Adult League cup finals in June.

The Junior league again takes place at Bedford Academy and is for children in years 5 – 8 (ages 9 – 13). The league takes place on a Sunday morning from February through to June. Years 5 and 6 take part in High 5 netball and years 7 and 8 compete against each other in 7 a side matches. The format is the same as the youth league with league and cup competitions. At present we have over 50 teams participating. At the end of the season we hold a Charity Tournament, where we raise funds for the leagues nominated charity and also present the seasons trophies.

In addition to the opportunities we offer our players, we also support our young coaches and umpires by encouraging the clubs to support them through their coaching and umpiring qualifications and allowing them to be mentored during the league matches. To further support them we have set up a funding opportunity where the young official can apply for 80% of the course costs to be met by the league. For further details contact your club coach or the Youth and Junior League chair.

If you would like further details of the leagues or funding applications, please contact the Junior and Youth League Chair, Claire Southam. Click here to email Claire

The Club Action Planning Scheme (CAPS)

CAPS is an accreditation scheme which helps netball clubs function in the most efficient way, ensuring the clubs offer a quality environment for all members. It is directly linked to Sport England’s Clubmark, which provides a national standard for good practice in the development of players, coaches, officials and volunteers, also helping to clarify roles and responsibilities within the club at all three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold.
